ESSA Raises the Bar for Comprehensive Family Engagement

ESSA has restored funding for family engagement. Three key areas include:

  • Parent and teacher communication plan for student learning
  • Family Engagement Centers
  • Allocations of funds to districts for family engagement.

ESSA has boosted family engagement, but states will need to establish their own processes for successful relationships with families that are built on solid student learning. Examples of funding that is refocused on families include Title I that supports family engagement activities, broader outreach, and collaboration; Title II that provides training for educators on strong family engagement practices; Title IV, Part A Student Support and Academic Enrichment that encourages safe and healthy student. Also Title III, IDEA, and Title I, Part C – migrant education, and Impact Aid also provide avenues for funding for family engagement.
